It can be an overwhelming topic with so many pills, potions & lotions out there being advertised to you but which are the key supplements that we should really consider including in our diets & who are some of the companies we can trust to provide us with high quality products?
It doesn't have to be a daunting task though & that's where I hope this blog post can help advise you.
First up...…..
Vitamin D- The "Sunshine Vitamin"
An essential vitamin for calcium absorption , the maintenance of healthy teeth & bones, supporting your immune system & aiding normal muscle function. A deficiency of this vitamin can lead to increased susceptibility of infection & autoimmunity.
Common signs of being deficient in this vitamin are:
Tiredness & Fatigue
Low Mood
Weak Immune System
Muscle Weakness & Aching Bones
Where can you get Vitamin D from?
As eluded to in it's nickname, the best source of this vitamin comes from the sun & is created naturally when our skin comes into contact with the sunlight BUT this can be a major problem for those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere where the levels of sunlight we receive all year round isn't adequate enough to create sufficient levels. The main problem time in the UK is between October-March & it is now recommended that we all take Vitamin D in a supplement form during this time.
We can also get a small amount of Vitamin D from foods such as oily fish, red meat, eggs & fortified foods such as cereals & spreads but the amounts aren't enough to provide us with the daily levels we ideally require.
So, what are the best Vitamin D Supplements I can use?
Two products I have personally used & can recommend are:
Bioglan Vitamin D Gummies
Suitable for vegetarians & also available in a product for children
BetterYou Daily Oral Vitamin D Spray

Magnesium
A vital nutrient, crucial for healthy bones and present in every cell of our body. It helps to aid the conversion of the food we eat into the energy we require. It's other benefits include reducing fatigue weakness in muscles, aiding muscle recovery after physical activity & improving quality of sleep.
Where you can get Magnesium from in your diet:
Brown rice
Seafood
Dark green vegetables such as spinach
Legumes (e.g. lentils)
Beans such as kidney & edamame beans
Nuts (raw & unprocessed)
Seeds (e.g. sunflower & pumpkin)
Buckwheat
Wholegrain cereals

Turmeric
This colourful spice might possibly be the most beneficial nutritional supplement in existence. In various studies it has been shown to have major benefits to both brain and body.
A few of it's benefits include:
-Powerful antioxidant & anti-inflammatory properties due to it containing a compound called Curcumin. (Turmeric spice itself contains a very small amount of Curcumin so it's best to look for a supplement which includes a turmeric extract which has a high level of Curcumin)
-Curcumin has a significant impact on factors related to heart disease due to it having a beneficial impact on the function of the Endothelium (the lining of your blood vessels)
-Found to potentially have a positive effect on cancer growth, development & spreading at molecular level. (It has yet to be studied in depth but in a number of research tests, positive results have be shown towards helping to treat & prevent cancer)
-Ability to cross the blood-brain barrier enabling various potential improvements in the cause/effect of Alzheimer's disease.
- Effective in helping to treat symptoms of Arthritis & in some studies, it has been shown to be more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs.
