Is Drinking A Fruit Juice As Good As Eating Whole Fruits?
You should try to consume no more than 150ml of fruit juice a day as they tend to be high in sugar. Drinking a juice also doesn't come with all the benefits of actually eating a piece of fruit. When fruit is juiced, the process actually releases sugars from within the cells of the fruit which turns them into free sugars...the type we need to cut down in our diet!
Whole fruits generally contain less sugar than foods such as cakes, biscuits and chocolates as well as not containing added fat.
Are Detoxes Good?
NO. With the exception of a very few people, our liver, kidneys and lungs are already doing a great job of ridding any toxins from our bodies & if they weren't doing their job effectively, you would feel very ill! People tend to get led towards doing a "detox" after a period of overindulgence in unhealthy foods & alcoholic drinks but instead of being drawn into a detox diet, the best thing is to simply just stick to a few days of lighter meals, containing a well balanced variety of wholesome foods, stay adequately hydrated (alcohol free days!) and get in some physical activity each day. A detox makes people think that it's ok to overindulge and then just carry out a detox after, but that isn't the case! Instead of being drawn in by a company or a person offering you a detox program & supplements, you're are far better to make sure you're eating a balanced diet, including your daily portions a day of fruit & veg, keep your alcohol intake low & within the recommended guidelines, don’t smoke, be as active as possible on a daily basis and get your hours of sleep. You'll soon notice the benefits that implementing these things brings.
Avocados....Friend Or Foe?
Avocados actually contain a high level of fat & calories compared to other fruits & vegetables but this doesn't mean that you shouldn't eat them. The fats they contain are mainly good unsaturated fats and when they are eaten in your diet in the place of the unhealthier saturated fats, they can help to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Avocado counts towards to your daily fruit and veg total and contains vitamins, minerals & fibre but if you are going to include it in your diet regularly, it's worth planning the rest of your diet a bit more carefully due to the energy & fat content. So Avocado Is Definitely A Friend!
Do I Need To Take Supplements?
Supplements can be beneficial to the diets of some individuals who have deficiencies but unless you have been prescribed vitamin supplements by a medical professional, taking some supplements with added vitamins can seem like a harmless addition to your diet but can cause adverse effects to your health. Vitamin D is one vitamin which is recommended that you take in supplement form here in the UK due to the decreased amount of sunlight we are able to capture & use in the body.
Children between the ages of one and four should take a 10 microgram vitamin D supplement all year long
Adults & children over five should consider taking a 10 microgram vitamin D supplement in the winter months ( Oct-March) Protein supplements can be useful for those seeking an easy way to get more protein into their diet or for a convenient way to consume a portion of their daily protein intake when they don't have access to any other food or are unable to cook a meal/ in-between meals. Always look for reputable, high quality sources which don't have lots of added sugars & ingredients.
