New Year, New You! It's that time of the year again where everywhere we look, we are flooded with adverts, articles & posts from people & companies trying to sell weight loss products, programmes & supplements.
Weight loss sells- Unfortunately though, it usually is sold in the form of some sort of supplement or meal replacement programme, backed up by pages of testimonials from people who have gained some SHORT TERM results by suffering through whatever supplement/shake they've been consuming just long enough to get those results. These products often can cost 3x (at least) the amount you'd need to spend on fresh produce to last you the same period of time.
Just because it's being sold on a "health food" or sports nutrition site, it doesn't = healthy either
Don't be fooled into thinking a product is any good by the fact it's endorsed by your favourite reality tv star or best mate on Facebook either! They are being paid huge amounts of money to pretend that they like the product & are gaining amazing results from it, are gaining a commission from selling the product to you & 99% of these people are not qualified to give you nutrition & health advice!
Meal replacement products & supplements when used in the correct context are great:
For those with medical conditions which affect the person's ability to lose weight effectively, meal replacements can be used to great effect.
For elderly people who struggle to eat a balanced diet with sufficient macro & micro nutrients, meal replacement products are perfect
Supplements are exactly what their name says....they are to supplement your diet & help provide you with nutrients which are not so easily accessible through the foods you consume or not readily accessible. THEY ARE NOT THERE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH NUTRIENTS BECAUSE YOU CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO EAT A BALANCED DIET & IT'S EASIER TO THROW A SCOOP OF POWDER INTO A GLASS OR TAKE A TABLET!

So, what really matters when it comes to weight loss?
* Consume Whole Foods (The Majority Of The Time)- Fruits, Vegetables, Legumes, Wholegrains etc
*Being Active- This doesn't mean you have to run 15 miles everyday, do 500 burpees & taking part in 10 different online workouts every week ( although if you want to, you can!). Just moving around your house throughout the day, going for a walk or even doing some gardening....it all counts and will help towards your weight loss. One of the most important things when aiming for weight loss though is to do some form of resistance training or else you could be losing muscle mass too.
*Patience & Consistency- Sorry to tell you this but there are no quick fixes or magic potions & pills for weight loss. It takes times & being consistent with your diet & activity levels. Your relationship with food is going to have to change, in some cases it may be minor changes or it could be quite big changes & these changes could take years rather than months for progress to be seen to be bearing fruit. Also, lots of people when they are aiming to lose weight try to change everything all at once instead of implementing in stages.
Small, Consistent Changes = Long Term Results
*Track Progress- Take regular measurements & photos, test out areas of fitness at regular intervals & keep a log of all the data you collect each time. You might not feel as though you have made progress but the numbers on the paper, the photos & the improvement in fitness can all tell you that you're heading in the right direction.
*Gain Advice & Support From A Qualified Individual-They will look into your diet, lifestyle and health issues in depth as well as considering your physical activity levels and the foods you enjoy in order to create a realistic, healthy weight-loss diet plan tailored to you. They can help monitor your progress and make any amendments that need to be made to your diet. Making lots of changes to your lifestyle, often drastic can be dangerous & lead to health issues & complications so it is always best to consult with a qualified & insured professional and/or your GP.
